E CITY offered its second program at Empire CompuTech Middle School this spring. Due to CMSD budget issues, which called for the elimination of after-school programming, the E CITY class was in jeopardy until Principal Valerie Flowers found a donor who offered to pay the custodial overtime fees three days a week so that the students could stay after school. E CITY Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher, Peg Zitzner, met with 25 students Tuesdays though Thursdays from 4:00pm-6:00pm. During the second week of class, the students created Rice Krispies treats that they sold at the school, along with soda. After graduation, they used the monies raised from the sale for a pizza party. This activity help them learn about the different costs of running a business, and the difference between Start up Costs, Cost of Goods Sold, and Operating Costs. The students also went on a field trip to the Plain Dealer, along with their wholesale trip to Michaels and Costco

We thank the following volunteer “coaches” who helped students polish their business ideas in preparation for their presentations, and the judges who rated the presentations and gave feedback to the students . |

This spring E CITY completed its first program at Empire CompuTech Center. The program, funded by Key Foundation, began on January 28, 2004 and culminated in a business plan competition and graduation on April 8, 2004 where over 50 people, including many parents and family members, were in attendance. The class, which met after school three days a week, was taught by E CITY’s Associate Director |

and Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher, Nicole Lawrence. Throughout the program the students had the opportunity to hear success stories from several entrepreneurs and guest speakers; visit the Plain Dealer, WKYC Channel 3 studios, KeyBank and 2 local wholesalers; and learn about stocks, which they tracked using the Wall Street Journal. The students also had a sales event at Wal-Mart on Saturday, March 27th where they made over $630 in sales. Wal-Mart matched each dollar as a donation to E CITY. There were 13 students in this class and 100% of the class successfully graduated from the program. The average attendance was 92%. Valerie Flowers, the principal, was extremely pleased with the success of the program and looks forward to continuing the partnership with E CITY. |
