YMCA students working on their business plans

There are two ways
of meeting difficulties.
 You alter the difficulties
 or you alter yourself
 to meet them.

E City and the Miles Avenue Family YMCA

This past fall, seven students, ages 11-16, were selected to participate in the E City after-school program at the Miles Avenue Family YMCA, located in the city of Cleveland on Miles Avenue at E. 113th Street. All seven students were interviewed by E City staff or volunteers before being accepted into the program, and all had parental support, an essential component to the program’s success.

The students attended class four days a week for an hour and a half each day after school. Many rode the RTA from their school to the YMCA just to attend this fun and exciting new program.

The commitment and dedication of all seven students may be why this program is perhaps the most focused and spirited of all the E City programs. The teacher is Genevieve Skettle, a Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher, and the program has the full support of Greg Bell, Director of the YMCA.

The first E City program at the Miles Avenue Family YMCA proved to be a tremendous success. All seven students successfully completed the program on November 25th, presented a basic business plan to a panel of judges. Lorryn Russell finished in first place winning $150 prize money. Her sister, Tovaya Russell, was awarded $100 as the second place winner. Landus Reed won $50 for third place. (See their plans!)

The students and Ms. Skettle enjoyed working together so much that they all decided to continue the class. This spring, Ms. Skettle will use the NFTE intermediate curriculum to help further develop the students’ entrepreneurial and business skills.
