E City’s second summer program, sponsored by the Cleveland Municipal School District, was held July 1-25 at Washington Park Horticultural Center. Twelve students completed the 70 hour curriculum taught by David Eichorn and Tanisha Jackson-Long, both teachers at Jane Addams Business Center.
The average attendance for this summer program was over 88%. The students visited the Cleveland Browns Stadium, Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, Phil the Fire and several Cleveland wholesalers. These students also received $50 to start a small business. With the help of ten volunteer business plan coaches, the students turned their ideas into basic business plans.
Five student finalists went on to compete in a Business Plan Competition held at Cuyahoga Community College on Friday, July 25th. Sylvia Haynes took home the first place prize of $150. Second place went to Shaquilia Harris. The third place winner was Martrice Townsend.
The students in the Washington Park Horticultural program learn about gardening hands on by planting and caring for their school garden projects throughout the summer months. Over forty schools participate in this program which begins in the spring semester with students learning about gardens in their science lessons.
